Latvian PM: municipalities must cooperate for sake of balanced national growth

Balanced national growth depends on willingness and ability of local governments to cooperate among themselves, Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) said at the congress of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments in Liepaja city in south-western Latvia on May 20th, cites LETA.

"Sentiment is inappropriate when you try to attract more investments,” he said, pointing out that large towns that can offer good infrastructure and labor are more appealing to investors.

"I am not in favor of two-speed Latvia, and the government seeks to achieve balanced growth but the regions have to think what they can do, and that goes also for willingness and ability of municipal leaders to cooperate. They have to step out of territorial boundaries and look for cooperation partners,” the prime minister said.

Reluctance of small municipalities to cooperate among themselves is “the path to depopulation of regions”, Kucinskis said.

As reported, the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments was holding its 27th congress in Liepaja. The congress is expected to adopt several resolutions, including about development of municipal democracy, economic growth, availability of health care, structural reforms in education and poor condition of roads.
