According to the Estonian police, the persons that have been caught smuggling illegal migrants through Estonia have mainly been Iraqis living in other European countries, informs LETA/BNS.

"They are not Estonian residents. Twice the men who organized the smuggling have been Iraqi men residing in Finland and Sweden," North prefect Kristian Jaani said in an interview to the daily Postimees.

The police last year caught four illegal human smugglers, three of whom have by now been found guilty by a court and one is still in custody.

One Iraqi man who is suspected of people smuggling with an intent to make money lived in the Netherlands, but is at present in custody for pretrial investigation, Jaani added.

According to Jaani one of the main locations where people entering the country illegally are caught is Tallinn's Old City Harbor.

"Around eight million people pass through the Old City Harbor in a year and it is easy to hide illegal operations in that crowd," Jaani said.
