On 27 August 2015, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevicius began his official visit to Indonesia. In Indonesia's capital city Jakarta, Linkevicius met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to discuss strengthening relations between Lithuania and Indonesia, international issues and opportunities for Lithuanian entrepreneurs to work in the Indonesian market, Lithuania's MFA reports BC.

The heads of diplomacy of Lithuania and Indonesia signed three bilateral agreements: agreement on economic and technical cooperation, agreement on the abolition of visa requirements for the holders of diplomatic and service passports, a memorandum on bilateral consultations between the MFAs.

During the meeting, the foreign ministers agreed that there was a need to promote new opportunities for cooperation in the fields of education, renewable energy and transport.

"Even though Indonesia is geographically far away, innovative Lithuanian companies are already competing successfully in this market. Therefore, I hope that the agreements that we are signing today will help carry economic relations forward," said Linkevicius.

According to the Lithuanian foreign minister, in order to further strengthen bilateral people-to-people and business contacts, it can be particularly beneficial for Indonesia to waive visa requirements for Lithuanian citizens, just as this country has done for some other member-states of the European Union.

As regards the relationship between the EU and Indonesia, Linkevicius pointed out that the talks on the new trade agreement with Indonesia should aim to ensure the signing of an ambitious agreement, just like with other EU trading partners.

Linkevicius also invited Indonesia's head of diplomacy to pay an official visit to Lithuania. This is the first official visit of the Lithuanian foreign minister to this Southeast Asian country.
