Ministry: border has to be bolstered to prevent "little green men" from appearing in Latvia

"Despite doing its job well, the Border Guard needs to be bolstered to counter modern-day challenges and prevent "little green men" from appearing in Latvia," as Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (Unity) said at a meeting where the annual report of the Border Guard was presented, cites LETA.

"2014 was a difficult year for the institutions of internal affairs taking into consideration the developments in Ukraine, where manning border areas was one of the greatest problems. At the moment, Latvian Border Guard has to prevent not only smuggling, but also illegal immigration and other challenges," said the minister.

"Solving these problems and increasing salaries in the Border Guard requires financing, and that is one problem that the Interior Ministry is working on. The United States said recently that it would help improve the Border Guard," Kozlovskis reminded.

In terms of border demarcation with Russia, Latvia has been able to do more than its neighbor countries, however, the frontier area is in poor shape and requires improvements, said the minister.
