Estonian shipbuilding company BLRT Grupp bought in Riga a former metals plant lot where the concern's subsidiary Elme Metall will open its largest logistics and services center; the total investment is 20 million euros, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

BLRT Grupp and Elme Metall board member Igor Berman said that a logistics and service center with space of up to 60,000 square meters will be erected on the nearly nine hectares lot.

Berman said that building logistics and services centers in Tallinn and Kaunas were considered as alternative but Riga was picked as it is logistically the best place for operating in the Baltic States.

The lot currently houses a production and warehouse building, renovated office building and a railway line.

Currently the production building is used as warehouse but by the end of the year the logistics center should be fully operational and services center should start operating next year.

Most likely scrap metal buyer and handler Refornda will open its center on the same lot too.
