Municipal waste delivery to Vilnius cogeneration plant kicks off

BC, Vilnius, 05.10.2020.Print version
The project of Ignitis Grupe's new 350-mln-euro combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Vilnius has achieved a new milestone with the delivery of municipal waste, pre-sorted at a mechanical biological treatment (MBT) facility, which was launched on Monday, informed LETA/BNS.

Initial deliveries would be used for fine-tuning the operation of the CHP facility, Lithuania's state-owned energy group Ignitis Grupe (Ignitis Group) said.

Vilnius MBT facility processes approximately 230,000 tons of waste per year. Residual waste after such treatment – approximately 120,000 tons – will be used for power  generation.

The CHP plant, which will have a total capacity of some 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity and around 240 MW of heat energy, is expected to launch commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2020. Its capacity will be sufficient to generate about 40 percent of the city's centrally supplied heat energy and cover the needs of some 230,000 households.

The project was financed using EU funding (up to 140 mln euros), the European Investment Bank's loan (up to 190 mln euros) and Ignitis Grupe's own funds.
