Lithuania's postal and courier services market grew to 52.65 mln euros in the second quarter of 2020, up 12.4 % from 46.85 mln euros in the same period last year, the country's Communications Regulatory Authority said LETA/BNS.

In terms of revenue, state-owned Lietuvos Pastas (Lithuanian Post) held the largest share of the market, at 35.2%, followed by DPD Lietuva with 22.1% and Venipak with 9.3%.

By the number of postal items handled, Omniva LT rose to the number-one spot for the first time in the reporting period (since the second quarter of 2018) with a 28.5% market share, pushing DPD Lietuva down into second position with 26.2%. Lietuvos Pastas held 21.4% of the market.

The nationwide coronavirus quarantine, which lasted between March 16 and June 17, had an impact on the postal market's second-quarter results, the Communications Regulatory Authority noted.

"As an increasing number of business activities were moving into the virtual space and the popularity of e-commerce was growing during the quarantine, so was the need for postal services, especially parcel delivery," it said.

While revenue from letter-post items dropped by 18.2% y-o-y to 15.18 mln euros, revenue from parcels soared by 31.1% to 34.58 mln euros.

49 companies operated in the postal market in late June.
