Modernization of the Daugava Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) dam has strengthened Latvia's position in the group of the leading European Union member states where renewable energy makes up a large share of electricity generation, Economics Minister Janis Vitenbergs (KPV LV) said during a visit to Latvenergo power utility facilities on Friday, cites LETA.

According to Latvenergo, the company's reconstructed cogeneration plant and the Daugava HPP play an important role in ensuring Latvia's power independence, for instance, in 2017 the HPPs and the cogeneration plan covered 79 percent of the electricity demand in Latvia.

Last year, 33 percent of total electricity produced by Latvenergo Group was generated using renewable energy sources, the company said, adding that the ongoing reconstruction of the Daugava HPP will increase the use of renewable energy sources even more in the coming years.

Vitenbergs pointed out that the assets managed by Latvenergo have historically formed the backbone of the Latvian energy system, the rational maintenance and development of which is the basis for a sustainable future energy system.
