The Latvian philanthropist presents two prestigious Medals to Mayors in USA and Taiwan

The Latvian-born British philanthropist Marcis Liors Skadmanis has presented the Honorary Medal 2020 of World NGO Day to Dean Trantalis, the Mayor of Fort Lauderdale in Florida, USA and Lu Shiow-Yen, Mayor of Taichung City in Taiwan.

The Honorary Medal of World NGO Day is a prestigious award to city mayors or heads of municipalities and NGO leaders for their outstanding work in civil society and NGO sector.

 

The Mayor of Taichung City Lu Shiow-Yen became the first Mayor to be awarded the Honorary Medal of World NGO Day 2020 in the East Asia. In addition, the medal was awarded to  Zafar Iqbal the NGO leader and activist from Pakistan, on behalf of Skadmanis the Award was presented by Malik Amin Aslam Khan, the Federal Minister and Advisor to the Prime Minister for Climate Change in Islamabad, Pakistan.

 

In welcome speech, Marcis Skadmanis highlighted We would like to take this opportunity to thank both Mayors and their city governments for the great work and support to the NGO sector and civil society in their cities”.

 

Mayor of Taichung, Lu Shiow-Yen said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank for the recognition of Taichung’s City efforts of the promotion of NGO. I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of Taichung City. In addition to the dedication of all my colleagues in the Taichung City Government, we feel very lucky that there are a lot of NGO organisations in this city working together to participate in the municipality projects.”

 

Taichung is an industrial city with population 2.817 million people on the western side of central Taiwan and Fort Lauderdale is a city on Florida's southeastern coast, known for its beaches and boating canals.

 

The Honorary Medal of World NGO Day is a private international award and presented annually, it was created in 2019. This Medal is awarded to Mayors, Heads of counties, Governors and NGO leaders for achievement in the promotion and support of Sustainable development of NGO (Nonprofit organization) sector; have made a significant positive impact on local NGO, non-profit sector; or raised awareness of the international day of NGOs in their city, county or country.

 

Every year World NGO Day is marked from New Zealand and Australia to the North and South Americas and has been marked in 96 countries between 2014-2020. This year Mr Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission has stated "On World Non-Governmental Organisation Day, the European Union applauds the fundamental contribution made by civil society organisations to the promotion of human rights, good governance, democracy and the rule of law."
