Latvijas Balzams considering producing disinfectants also in the future

Latvijas Balzams, the largest producer of alcoholic beverages in Latvia, is considering continuing the production of disinfectants even after the state of emergency caused by Covid-19, if the regulation allows and there will be demand, Intars Geidans, chairman of the company's board, told LETA.

He noted that the company turned very quickly to the production of disinfectants at the start of the Covid-19 crisis and demand for them was very high in the first weeks. However, demand for disinfectants has now declined, but remains stable.

Geidans added that Latvijas Balzams is the largest producer of disinfectants in Latvia in terms of volume, but does not reach the majority of consumers, as it produces mostly large packages. Meanwhile, other producers immediately started producing in small packages available to a wide range of consumers.

Geidans also pointed out that the market for disinfectants is currently saturated. "In general, the supply on the market today is greater than the demand or need for disinfectants. At present, manufacturers have produced products in all possible forms and packaging, and we will have enough until the end of the year," he said.

Asked whether Latvijas Balzams plans to continue the production of disinfectants in the future, Geidans answered in the affirmative, at the same time noting that the production of disinfectants in the long run will depend on the company's technological possibilities and regulatory framework.

"During the emergency, the state has allowed production with exceptions, which was not the case in the normal situation. If there is demand from distributors and we can produce these products at a good price, then, of course, we will continue to do so," he said.
