Covid-19 Latvia: Kalsnava Distillery Gives 1000 Litres of Alcohol to the Children’s Hospital for Making Disinfectants

BC, Riga, 27.04.2020.Print version
The largest Latvian producer of organic alcohol Kalsnava Distillery will give 1000 litres of alcohol to the Children’s Clinical University Hospital in Riga to make disinfectants.

“In March, we repurposed our production with account of the urgent demands of the local market, and now the bulk of our manufactured products is forwarded to make disinfectants that are required in Latvia,” said Chairperson of the Board of Kalsnava Distillery Liana Dravniece.

Owing to its key position on the market, the enterprise regularly receives efficient and accurate information on the situation that allows one to objectively evaluate where its products are currently most required.

“Having analysed the situation, we proposed an initiative to give a large batch of ethyl alcohol to the Children’s Hospital in Riga. We sincerely hope that it will help the personnel and patients to combat the infection and to strictly observe hygiene and sanitary rules. We all know how important it is today,” said Liana Dravniece.

In turn, Chairperson of the Board of the Children’s Clinical University Hospital Valts Abols said, “In the current crisis situation, one of our priorities is to protect patients and employees of the hospital. We take all the required measures in order to maximally restrict the spread of the infection. We perform thorough disinfection in the entire hospital, we have developed special instructions on the use of personal protective equipment and have introduced a number of other innovations in order to make staying in the hospital safe for both patients and their families, as well as for the personnel, even in such a difficult period.

We are very grateful for the support at a time when some things, including disinfectants that are required so much, have become less accessible. Now the Children’s Hospital can supplement its reserves with goods made in Latvia.”

Kalsnava Distillery transfers ethyl alcohol to the Children’s Hospital in the form of sale, having provided a 99% discount on the regular price, in accordance with the valid legislation that prohibits donating or transferring substances containing alcohol without remuneration.

The first batch of ethyl alcohol will already be delivered to the Children’s Hospital this week.

Starting from the second half of March, Kalsnava Distillery has been operating round the clock, in order to satisfy the huge demand from manufacturers of disinfectants in Latvia. Earlier, the enterprise, which manufactures high-quality grain alcohol, exported about 90% of its products. These raw materials are in demand by European companies specialising in the production of alcoholic beverages, including premium alcoholic beverages, and in the production of cosmetics, as well as by companies in a number of other industries.

After the start of the spread of Covid-19 in Latvia, the plant has repurposed its production within the shortest time and now supplies its products to local manufacturers of disinfectants. 100% of the capacity of Kalsnava Distillery is being used.
