A flight carrying a record-large cargo of 3PLY surgical masks and FFP2 respirators landed at Riga Airport on Thursday morning, delivering a total of four million protective masks and 18,000 respirators, Edijs Eglins, CEO of Lauma Fabrics textile company, informed LETA.

Most of the personal protective equipment (PPE) delivered to Riga on Thursday has been ordered by the National Health Service for Latvia's healthcare services providers, while a part of the cargo will be forwarded to Estonia.

"We are extremely honored for being entrusted by the Latvian state to deliver the much needed masks and respirators. Given the heavy reliance of Latvia and entire Europe on Chinese deliveries, we believe that it is necessary to start manufacturing surgical masks and respirators here in Latvia," said Eglins.

This is already the second PPE cargo delivered by Lauma Fabrics to Latvia. The first cargo was transported on April 2 via Tallinn Airport. Under an agreement concluded between Lauma Fabrics and the National Health Service, the company will deliver 5 mln surgical masks and 1 mln respirators, with a third delivery of PEE products expected shortly.

Lauma Fabrics, based in the southwestern Latvian city of Liepaja, makes lace, elastic knitted fabric, ribbons, etc. The company was founded in late 2005. Lauma Fabrics belongs to European Lingerie Group (ELG).
