President Kaljulaid discussed the COVID-19 crisis with other presidents of the region

President Kersti Kaljulaid spoke today online and over the phone with her colleagues from Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia. The discussions focused on the developments of the COVID-19 induced crisis in these countries and the measures taken to contain the virus. Another topic was how to ensure the most effective way of bringing everyone's citizens home, informed President`s Communication departament.

During the virtual meetings, a joint understanding was reached that it is imperative to ensure the movement of goods across borders because problems in supply chains will affect small states the most. In discussions with President of Latvia Egils Levits, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, President of Poland Andrzej Duda and President of Finland Sauli Niinistö, it was emphasized that both regional and EU cooperation will be necessary to ensure it. The possible effects of the crisis on the economy of the countries and the region and the measures taken by the countries were also discussed.


The situation in both countries and the need to ensure the fast arrival home of all citizens and residents were also discussed with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. President Putin thanked the President of Estonia for taking the initiative to talk and it was agreed that both Heads of State will continue to communicate quickly and operatively when necessary. Contact persons were assigned in respective embassies in order to coordinate the processes in an effective manner. The Finno-Ugric Conference currently planned to happen in June, was also briefly discussed during the phone call.
