Riga airport plans to introduce innovative airfield guidance system

BC, Riga, 29.06.2018.Print version
International airport Riga for EUR 12.675 million plans to introduce an innovative airfield guidance system, the airport’s representative Laura Karnite reported LETA.

The total financing to the project is EUR 12,675,578, including EUR 10,774,241 financing from the Cohesion Fund, and EUR 1,901,337 coming from the airport’s own funds.

Karnite said that the Riga airport has become one of the first airports in Europe to start introduction of the innovative airfield guidance system Follow the Greens (FTG).

Follow the Greens is an innovative system of guidance which assesses all aircraft traffic on the airfield, identifies the optimal routing to the gate or from gate to runway, and automatically illuminates the taxiway centerline lights ahead of the aircraft. Instead of following radio instructions from the air traffic control tower, pilots simply follow the green lights. The system helps reduce taxi times, save fuel and emissions while improving taxiway safety.

The Riga airport signed the agreement with the Latvian Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFLA) on December 27, 2016.

Riga International Airport is the largest air traffic hub in the Baltic states. The airport offers flights to more than 60 destinations in the winter season and to nearly 90 destinations in summer, operated by 20 airlines.
