BC, Riga, 13.06.2018.Print version
The Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment Bior plans to invest EUR 6.5 million in developing a fish stock research center, LETA was told at the institute.

The new research center will be developed as part of the institute's strategy 2016-2020, which envisages boosting the institute's research capacity, concentrating its resources and upgrading research infrastructure. The European Regional Development Fund will cover EUR 5.2 million of the project's costs.

Bior director Aivars Berzins said that by creating the fish stock research center Latvia will strengthen its leading position in the Baltics, contributing at the same time to the growth of the national economy.

"Work of the project began in 2007by simultaneously developing two parallel segments of the project - the drafting of the building's design project and the purchasing of unique equipment like ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer," the Bior director said.

He informed that the new research center is scheduled for launch in late 2020 and that scientific development, innovation and expertise will be its main criteria of excellence. "The institute has to work out scientific methods others would want to take over," the Bior director said.
