"Riga Freeport is interested in development of new cooperation to learn from experience of Lianyungang port, develop transport connections with Eurasia and multimodal transport corridor from the Yellow Sea to the Baltic Sea and Scandinavia," said Riga Freeport deputy administrator Martins Ziemanis.

During the meeting he informed colleagues from China that the Riga Freeport may ensure port infrastructure that it is compatible with infrastructure of the One Belt, One Road initiative countries, ensuring efficient transport connections.

Ziemanis invited representatives of the Lianyungang port and city to visit Latvia, meet with representatives if the Latvian port, railway and logistics companies to continue cooperation.

According to the freeport, Lianyungang is one of the starting stops of the New Silk Road, serving domestic and international cargo flows, ensuring combined sea-railway transport services. The first China-Europe container train was opened in 1992, when the new transport corridor from Lianyungang port via Middle Asia linked with Rotterdam port in the Netherlands. Last year the port reloaded more than 220 million tons of cargo and 4.65 million TEU containers, which makes it the tenth largest port in China.

Riga Freeport is the largest port in Latvia with 194 businesses, including stevedores operating at the port. Last year the port reloaded 37.07 million tons of cargo.
