A new 5-million-euro aircraft platform is projected at the Siauliai airport, northern Lithuania, if the construction plans get a green light from the city's administration, the national radio LRT said on Friday morning, cites LETA/BNS.

Andrius Daujotas, CEO of the airport, emphasized the strategic significance of the airport, which can create a major added value for the whole region – bring financial benefits and create new jobs. In his words, airport development is held back by poor infrastructure.

According to calculations, the new platform would cost about 5 million euros, with the construction still endorsed by the Siauliai City Council.

"Investments are possible in the location, which is attractive, as it is an international airport, a strategic company in the middle of Lithuania where everything is around, namely, Riga, Vilnius and Kaunas. It is attractive to everyone, we just lack infrastructure," Daujotas told LRT.

"We currently use the northern platform, which is a military airport, and we accept aircrafts here, however, its quality is rather poor," he added.

Lithuania's only cargo airport in Siauliai handles an average of about 1,500-2,000 tons of cargo per year.
