Joint-stock dairy company Food Union is currently constructing two production plants in China. It is planned that the company will begin production in China in 2018, the vice-president of Food Union's strategy and business development Normunds Stanevics said during a discussion session organized today by the Bank of Latvia, informs LETA.

''These are several hundreds of millions in investments,'' Stanevics said, adding that the production plants will be located in the Inner Mongolia and Shandong regions.

The production plants are expected to use milk sub-products made in Latvia. Stanevics said that five consumer tests have already been conducted in China, and that the Chinese were very enthusiastic about the Karums curd-snacks. ''Maybe this will not only be a loved product in the Baltics, but also in China,'' he said.

He said that Food Union will focus on manufacturing cheese, curd products, yogurts, and other dairy products in China.

The Food Union Group is now made up of seven dairy companies – joint-stock Rigas Piena Kombinats (Latvia), joint-stock Rigas Piensaimnieks (Latvia), joint-stock Valmieras Piens (Latvia), as well as ice cream producers Premia (Estonia), Premier Is (Denmark), Isbjorn Is (Norway) and Alpin57Lux (Romania).

According to preliminary results, Food Union posted EUR 175 million in sales in the Baltics in 2015. The company employs more than 800 people.
