It will help attract additional freight for the Rail Baltica line, make better use of the capacity of the Vilnius and Kaunas intermodal terminals and develop the transportation of semi-trailers by rail in Europe and the CIS, the Lithuanian state railway company said.

"Our customers' Western-bound rail freight will reach the destination on time and under the best possible terms and conditions. This will strengthen the company's position in the freight market," Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai CEO Stasys Dailydka said in a press release.

Dailydka and Hanss-Georg Werner, managing director at DB Cargo for the Eastern region, signed the agreement in Moscow last week.

The Lithuanian company's CEO said that the agreement was a historic step toward integration into the European railway system.

Germany's DB Cargo handles more than 330 million tons of freight annually.

Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai carried 48 million tons in 2015 and plans to handle 46 million tons this year.
