Thanks to harmonization of veterinary certificates, Latvian producers of animal products are able to export their products to five new regions in 2016, the Food and Veterinary Service told LETA.

Dairy companies can now export their products to Kurdistan region in Iraq and to United Arab Emirates, thermally-processed beef and beef products to Australia, fish products to Montentegro, and animal feed to Moldova.

At the moment, dairy companies certified by the Food and Veterinary Service can export their products to 33 countries, meat producers to 13 countries, fish product makers – to 26 countries, and egg producers – to 13 countries.

According to Erika Paulina, head of the International Trade Department at the Food and Veterinary Service, harmonizing veterinary certificates can take from a few months to a year or longer, depending on the partner country's requirements. She also said that, taking into consideration the limited opportunities for export to Russia, companies were interested in exporting their products to Arabian, African, South American and Asian countries, and that the Food and Veterinary Service was in talks with these regions' food and veterinary authorities.
