China Merchants Group to set up representative offices in Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 29.01.2016.Print version
China Merchants Group (CMG) is planning to establish two representative offices in Lithuania – one in the capital of Vilnius and other in the port of Klaipeda, informs LETA/BNS.

The latter will be set up by China Merchants Holdings, a port operator controlled by CMG.

The Chinese company would like to purchase a terminal in Klaipeda and to participate in the development of the planned outer deep-water port in the future, the port authority said on Friday.

"They see Klaipeda as an attractive Silk Road – a project currently developed by the Chinese government – location for a transport and logistics center in the west," Arturas Drungilas, the port's marketing director, said in a press release.

The Lithuanian port last year signed four memoranda with China Merchants Group and China Merchants Holdings on the establishment of a Silk Road transport and logistics center in Klaipeda and strategic partnership in developing the project, as well as on a possibility to develop an outer port.

The outer port would be able to accommodate Baltmax-type vessels that need a depth of 18 meters. The government back in 2009 added the project for an outer deep-water port to the list of ten strategically important projects that would require raising private capital.
