On October 27th, Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Simasius and Uber's representative Alexander Lobov signed a memorandum of trust. It was agreed with the world's largest transport sharing platform that Vilnius will soon start operating a pilot ridesharing programme, using the best European and US practices, informs LETA/ELTA.

Both sides have agreed to maintain a dialogue and together look for the best control practices which would regulate car sharing and ridesharing.

"Vilnius must offer a new quality of service and become a smart city. We want quick and good services, ridesharing service, and smaller traffic jams. Uber could become an alternative to traditional taxi services in Vilnius and benefit drivers, passengers, and Vilnius guests," the mayor said.

Uber is a Silicon Valley company that provides technology to connect drivers and passengers. Basically every car owner can make money by sharing a ride. For the passenger, the service is be cheaper than taxi service.

Estonia was the first in the Baltic countries, where the Uber program started operating this May.

Uber's pilot program provides travel sharing services through Uber's application. All drivers using UberPOP platform are checked by Uber before they start to work. Drivers must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check and have a no-violations license, car insurance and a personal vehicle.

While elsewhere in the world, Uber is facing serious criticism and for example in Portugal it was banned altogether at the end of April.
