Belarusian Railways receives EUR 160,000 from EU for Vilnius-Minsk route

European Union gave the Belarusian Railways around EUR 160,000 in order for country to install and improve GSM-R terminals on locomotives going between Vilnius and Minsk, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to BelTA.

The EU provided technical support as part of the project to improve passenger express communication between Vilnius and Minsk of the Lithuania-Latvia-Belarus cross-border cooperation program for 2007-2013 of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.

 

The equipment will be manufactured by the Belarusian company Agat System.

 

The Lithuanian and Belarusian railways launched the Vilnius-Minsk speed passenger communication project back in 2010. The first stage of the project was implemented in 2011. After the second stage the journey time between Vilnius and Minsk got shorter to two and a half hours. The third stage of the program is underway.
