The discussion about U.S. companies' possible investments in Latvia's energy market will be conceptual, but this is an opportunity not to be missed, and President Berzins plans to participate in a roundtable discussion about Latvia's gas market and infrastructure with U.S. energy company leaders.

President's press secretary Liga Krapane told channel LNT that during his meeting with the leading U.S. energy companies, Berzins also talked about Latvijas gaze shares.

Specific prices and conditions were not discussed, however, the idea that 47.23% of E.ON Ruhrgas shares could be bought by U.S. companies was discussed at the meeting.

As reported, the German company E.ON Ruhrgas is planning to sell its stake in Latvijas gaze and to withdraw from the Baltic market altogether. Last year, the government theoretically considered the possible strategies in case E.ON Ruhrgas decides to sell its Latvijas gaze shares.

At the moment, E.ON Ruhrgas owns 47.2% of Latvijas gaze shares, Russia's Gazprom has a 34% stake and Itera Latvija 16%.
