Qatar among possible gas suppliers to Lithuania's LNG Terminal

Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius confirmed that negotiations are ongoing with Qatar on possibility to supply natural gas to Klaipeda's Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal, reports LETA/ELTA.

"Yes, there are talks, it is being discussed. We are working not only with Qatar but also with other countries. I am pleased that the activity developed widely," head of the Government told the national radio.

The prime minister was also pleased that Lithuania has struck a preliminary agreement with Norway's Statoil. According to Butkevicius, Statoil was chosen because of the liquefied natural gas price, the company's commitment to supply gas for five years ensuring minimum gas consumption in Lithuanian market at 0.54 billion cubic metres and providing additional services which will generate more revenue for the terminal and Litgas company.

It is estimated that Lithuania's gas consumption, businesses included, amounts to 1.3 billion cubic metres. General gas consumption in Lithuania, according to the prime minister's knowledge, is 2.5-2.7 billion cubic metres.

Media reports emerged that gas price supplied by Statoil via Klaipeda terminal will be higher than the one agreed with Gazprom. Butkevicius stated that this is common because liquefied natural gas price is higher than the one supplied by pipes.

When asked whether the price was higher than USD 370 per 1000 m3 or lower than USD 480 per 1000 m3, what Lithuania is currently paying Gazprom, Butkevicius said he could not name the price at the moment.

The head of the Government was happy with construction progress of LNG Terminal in Klaipeda. So far work is lagging behind schedule by one week.
