"We are launching one more strategic object – the 110 km long gas pipeline stretching through Klaipeda, Plunge, Telsiai, Rietavas and Siauliai districts. Now Lithuania will have even better opportunities and higher capacity to transport gas," said the head of Government and thanked everyone who contributed to the implementation of the project for their expeditious work.

The construction of the gas transmission pipeline fulfils the European Union's project of common interest – Capacity Increase of Klaipeda-Kiemenai Gas Pipeline – which provides the needed capacity to transport gas from the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal in Klaipeda to consumers in Lithuania and other Baltic States via the connection in Kiemenai.

"This makes it possible for participants of the Baltic States market to diversify gas supply sources, it increases competitiveness of the Baltic States' gas market and ensures natural gas supply security," Prime Minister Butkevicius said during the ceremony.

It was planned that EUR 63.7 million was needed for the project. However, during its implementation, over 5% of the amount was saved, i.e. around EUR 3 million. EUR 27.6 million was provided for the project from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility. In addition, based on the cross-border expenditure sharing procedure a portion of the investment was financed by Latvia's natural gas transmission network operator.
