During the meeting, Linkevicius welcomed the excellent status quo of bilateral relations and dynamic economic cooperation. “Together with Estonia we implement strategic energy and transport projects that contribute to the integration of the Baltic infrastructure to the networks of the EU,” said the Lithuanian Foreign Minister. He named the synchronization of the Baltic electricity grids with the continental European grid, the implementation of the gas transmission project with Poland and the creation of a regional gas market as priorities for the energy sector. “During the implementation of these projects it is very important for the three Baltic States to cooperate closely with each other and to coordinate with Poland and the European Commission,” said Linkevicius. The Baltic States have submitted joint application to the European Commission for the Rail Baltica project funding, commended both ministers.

During the meeting, the Ministers discussed the situation regarding the Estonian security officer Eston Kohver kidnapped on 5 September by Russian authorities. Estonia’s Foreign Minister expressed gratitude to Lithuania for support.

The Ministers of the two countries underlined that the EU member states must maintain sanctions against Russia, until Russia completely implements Minsk agreements. The Ministers underlined the need to ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and rapprochement with the EU. “We all must continue to fully support Ukraine while calling on the country to implement all the necessary reforms,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.

The Ministers discussed the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga and cooperation in countering cyber-threats and propaganda.

During the meeting, Linkevicius informed his counterpart about the priorities of the Lithuania’s non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council the upcoming Presidency of the Security Council in May, laying special emphasis on the rule of law and protection of civilians, with special focus on the safety and security of journalists in armed conflict.

Pentus-Rosimannus presented the Lithuanian Foreign Minister with a blossoming hepatica flower, which holds valuable symbolism for Estonian Defence Force veterans who have contributed to strengthening the country’s security after the restoration of independence.
