Fuel excise tax increase opponents plan protest gathering in Estonia

Nearly 54,000 people in Estonia have joined the initiative "Say "no" to fuel excise tax increase!" in the Facebook and the organisers plan to hold a public meeting on May 6, 2015 in front of the Estonian parliament building, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

So far the North Estonian Police Prefecture has received a notice of a public meeting "Protest against the increase in fuel excise tax."

"It has not yet been registered, since the notice did not mention the persons responsible for public order at the meeting and the police awaits more information from the organizer," said spokesman for the North prefecture Madis Vaikmaa.

The notice states that the meeting will be held on May 6, and place stated is the square in front of the Riigikogu building in Toompea, Tallinn.

In the Facebook, the organisers say the possible demonstration will take place between 1 May to 1 June in Tallinn, Tartu and Narva.

"The new government wants to raise fuel excise tax to get the money to the Treasury, but wages remain still at the same level. Fuel excise tax increase would mean that in the year 2020, it would be cheaper to refuel in Finland, but the average salary is several times higher for the Finns. The excise tax hike would mean a major increase of food prices, transportation and many other related matters, which would make the lives of families already in difficulties even harder and there would be more of those who could no longer cope," the initiative writes.

Eesti Päevaleht writes that the people behind the initiative are 19-year-old Estonian Conservative People's Party (EKRE) member Silver Jõgger and 20-year-old member of the EKRE youth assembly Sander Särel.
