CO2 emissions in Latvia above average global indicator

BC, Riga, 20.02.2015.Print version
The amount of CO2 emissions in Latvia exceeds the average indicator in the world, reaching 7.5 tons a year, which is attributed to the economic recovery and increasing household income in the country, informs LETA.

According to a study conducted by the organization "Zala briviba" ("Green Freedom"), the largest amount of CO2 emissions was registered in the city of Riga – nine tons per capita a year. Meanwhile, consumption-based emissions in Salacgriva Region (northern Latvia) and the city of Ventspils were lower than the average indicator for Latvia – respectively, 5.75 and 7.2 tons of CO2 per capita a year. The largest emissions are associated with food consumption, transport, and public utilities.

The study focused on the effect of consumption and territorial effect on the environment in the city of Ventspils and Salacgriva Region.

Consumption-based emissions are closely connected with personal income. Throughout the past couple of years, when the economy slowly began to recover and household income increased, the amount of consumption-based emissions grew in Latvia as well. Since 2010, the amount of emissions in Salacgriva grew by 39%, in Ventspils – by 19%.

Meanwhile, the total amount of emissions in Salacgriva in 2013 was 49,387 tons of CO2, in Ventspils – 357,634 tons.

In order to achieve a reduction in emissions on the global and national level, it is important to understand the factors that have a local impact. However, the individuals and groups responsible for the required changes still have a low level of environmental awareness. Furthermore, access to instruments and technologies necessary to solve the issue remains limited.
