Financing agreement for Estonian universities signed

BC, Tallinn, 29.01.2013.Print version
Estonian education minister Jaak Aaviksoo and rectors of six public universities signed on Monday result-based agreements, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Based on the agreements, the financing of new admissions will increase from 12 million euros in 2012 to 18 million euros, which is by a third more than the admissions budget based on state-financed education orders so far.

"All the changes have been done in the name of two big aims – to guarantee better access to university education and give young people high quality university education that corresponds to their interests and at the same tome to the needs of the society," said Aaviksoo.

The minister said that now the university education reform moves from the ministries and the government to universities and there difficult disputes can be expected too.

With the transition to the operating support system, the state-financed education order and its complicated cost calculation mechanisms will be given up. In the future, universities can decide how many student places they create in different study spheres.
