49 MPs were for and 34 MPs against the law.
The Riigikogu Wednesdays session started at 2 p.m. and due to the delay tactics of opposition parties, that session ended Thursday morning, after which a new, Thursday session of the parliament followed and Thursday evening two additional sessions were held during which the parliament managed to approve of the law at 8.30 p.m.. That meant that the extraordinary session that the Riigikogu speaker had convened at coalition's proposal for midnight, in case the parliament didn’t manage to approve of the law, didn’t have to take place.
The coalition said that the aim of the law was to modernise the organisation of education – better guarantee equal availability of high-quality education, change the forms of basic school and high school work, organising the study work, management of schools, work of teachers, remuneration of their work.
The opposition claimed that the bill leaves several issues unsolved like the workload and wage of teachers and financing of support services.
Social Democratic Party MP Sven Mikser said that if the president doesn't send the law back to the Riigikogu then the SDP will make such a proposal.
