Theology Institute loses university status in Estonia

The Evangelical Lutheran Church Institute of Theology, the oldest private university in Estonia, has been deprived the status of university and must continue its activities under a different category – an institution of professional higher education, as the Estonian national broadcasting ERR reports referring to Postimees.

Students of the institute got academic degrees for years; however, last week the assessment council of the Higher Education Quality Agency of Estonia gave negative evaluation of the school's doctoral training curriculum. The institute also lost its accreditation for teaching social services on a master's level, reports LETA.

The institute's management was shocked.

"It was a unique service in Estonia that is not offered anywhere else. Clemency is combined with social competence," said Randar Tasmuth, the rector of the institute.

The council also closed down the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, mainly focused on educating Russian-speaking students.
