30 Lithuanian schools affected by coronavirus, 43 people ill

Thirty educational establishments in Lithuania have been affected by positive coronavirus cases among their students and staff, with a total of 43 people diagnosed with COVID-19 and 561 placed into isolation, an epidemiologists said on September 14th, reports LETA/BNS.

The infected people include 34 children (two of them are of pre-school age), six teachers, and three staff members with no direct contact with the educational process, Daiva Razmuviene of the National Public Health Center (NPHC) said. 


"Some 561 persons were in contact with the infected people and are in isolation," she said. 


Vilnius Gabija Progymnasium has been the only school so far to see an internal spread of the coronavirus. In all other educational establishments, students or teachers got infected from contacts with ill family members or other people outside their school. 


At Vilnius Gabija Progymnasium, eight people have tested positive for COVID-19, and 100 students and around 20 teachers are in isolation, Razmuviene said.


The school's grades 5 to 8 are switching g to remote teaching and learning because of the coronavirus outbreak. The school's first positive case was confirmed last week.
