More and more high school graduates in Latvia prefer work over studies

BC, Riga, 19.06.2017.Print version
Although 54% of young Latvians, aged 15 to 19, plan to study at university after graduating from high school, 33% are not sure about continuing their education beyond high school, a survey by the Swedbank Institute of Finances shows.

This year's high school graduates accounted for 23% of the polled youngsters.

The survey reveals that 47% of respondents plan to enroll at one of Latvia's institutions of higher education, 7% consider studies in foreign countries and 13% want to start working right after graduating high school.

In comparison with the situation two years ago, the number of young Latvians planning to continue their education has dropped from 63% in 2015, to 54%  this year, and the reduction is largely on account of those high school students who are inclined to start working, taking a break from studies. Their percentage has grown from 8%  in 2015 to 13% in 2017.
