Lithuanian Seimas allows state to sign contracts with universities

BC, Vilnius, 30.06.2016.Print version
The Lithuanian parliament Seimas has given the green-light to the state to sign contracts with higher education providers based on what professionals it needs and has allowed reducing the time needed for a bachelor's degree by a year to three years, informs LETA/BNS.

The Seimas on June 29th passed a new wording of the Law on Higher Education and Research.

Education and Science Minister Audrone Pitreniene told reporters that the new law would ensure that "study programs do not overlap and there is no fragmentation and that programs are cost-effective".

However, Gintaras Steponavicius, a former education and science minister, said that "there is a risk of the process being artificially politicized through contracts with higher education institutions that are formalized in the new law."
