In the first four months of the year 2016, the average monthly salary of teachers of municipal schools in Estonia was 1,135 euros, which marks a year-on-year rise of 6.3%, informs LETA/BNS.

According to data of the educational statistics website HaridusSilm.ee, the salary of teachers was highest in the Sauga, Saue and Nova rural municipalities and the city of Narva, where it exceeded 1,300 euros. Teachers in the Tootsi and Raikkula municipalities received lowest salaries of around 900 euros.

As of April, the average salary of teachers exceeded 1,200 euros in 18 municipalities, compared to six municipalities a year earlier and just two in 2014. Teacher salaries exceeded 1,000 euros in 83% of self-government units this year, 62% at the same time last year and only 13% in 2014.

By counties, highest average salaries are paid to teachers of the Harju, East-Viru and Tartu counties and lowest in the Viljandi and Laane counties.

The strategic goal is to raise the average pay of teachers by 2019 to a level equaling 120% of the national average wage. The state's support to local governments to top up the teacher payroll increased this year by 13.2 million euros or 7.3%, to 196 million euros.

The national minimum salary for teachers, i.e. the smallest amount schools can pay a full-time teacher per month, is 958 euros this year.
