Teachers' salaries to rise EUR 200 to EUR 300 from September 1 in Latvia

BC, Riga, 25.04.2016.Print version
Teachers' salaries will be EUR 200 to EUR 300 higher from September 1, Education and Science Minister Karlis Sadurskis (Unity) said in an interview with the LNT television this morning, informs LETA.

Later today, the Education and Science Ministry will present its new teacher remuneration system to the government's social partners.

Sadurskis believes that much has been achieved with what funds are available to his ministry. He also is confident that no additional funding will be necessary for raising teachers' salaries.

"There will be additional funding generated by internal optimization of the system," said Sadurskis.

In the interview, the minister also said that salaries for preschool teachers would increase only from January 1, 2017, provided that the government solves the problem of financial flows.

Another matter yet to be addressed is the disproportionate salaries at schools and universities and colleges.

When asked to comment on the idea that free lunches could be given up for 1st to 4th-graders so salaries could be increased for preschool teachers, Sadurskis said that "catering is not quite an educational function," adding though that children would still be provided free lunches.
