According to Estonian Minister of Education and Research Jurgen Ligi, the goal of the ministry is to raise the pay of municipal, private and state school teachers in 2016 by at least 6.4% on average, informs LETA/BNS.

"At present possibilities we estimate that teachers' minimum salary is to rise from 900 to 958 euros a month and the average pay will rise to at least 1,150 euros, but it depends on the law amendments at present being discussed in the parliament as well as state budget discussions," Ligi was quoted by spokespeople as saying.

According to Ligi the law amendments proposed by the government enable to raise teachers' average as well as minimum pay in 2016. He stressed that the state's strategic goal is to raise teachers' average pay to 120% of Estonia's average salary.

In the first nine months of the year the average pay of municipal school teachers was 1,094 euros which is 5% more than Estonia's average salary in the third quarter of the year. Teachers' minimum pay in 2015 is 900 euros.
