Lithuania's education minister calls universities to increase admission requirements

The Ministry of Education and Science in Lithuania has addressed higher education institutions urging to announce the lowest passing entrance scores in 2015. The necessity to establish admission threshold is provided for in the Law on Higher Education and Research, reports LETA/ELTA.

"Admission threshold is necessary if we want to have high quality higher education and be competitive on the international arena," said Minister of Education and Science Dainius Pavalkis, "Hopefully, higher education institutions will take into account our basic proposal and raise the bar higher, within their capabilities."

 

Those who wish to apply for state-funded student places in 2015 will have to pass ant least two "Matura examinations": the Lithuanian language and literature (state examination when applying to universities and school examination when applying to colleges) and a foreign language state examination.

 

Higher education institutions have to submit information on the established minimum criteria by 1 February.

 

In 2014, the lowest passing entrance scores were established by 4 of 47 higher education institutions: Vilnius University, Kaunas University of Technology, Vytautas Magnus University and Klaipeda University.
