Latvia's political system is increasingly characterized by irresponsibility and bickering, President Andris Berzins pointed out during the presentation of a book on the heraldry of Latvian regions at the House of the Blackheads yesterday, informs LETA.

The president stated: "Latvia's largest political parties have two to three thousand members. Their number is approximately three times smaller than in Estonia and four times smaller than in Lithuania. The current principle of governance in Latvia provides a balance of power, but does not ensure development."

This results in weak political responsibility, and rivalries that hinder joint effort, emphasized the president.

Berzins also pointed out that, unfortunately, new parties are established ahead of all elections, including municipal elections. Therefore Latvian parties resemble interest groups instead of being political players with strong programs and lasting political traditions.

"It is likely that this is the reason behind various factors that are curbing Latvia's development, and seeing Latvia's neighbors more successful in many areas, explained the president.

The president emphasized the need for change, including legislation.
