Estonian economy and communications minister Juhan Parts said at the opening of a business forum on contacts and cooperation of Estonia and South West Russia on Tuesday in St Petersburg that the cooperation between Estonia and North West Russia could be closer, reports LETA the ministry's press service.

"The connection of Estonians with St Petersburg is special – a hundred years ago, St Petersburg was a city where more Estonians lived than in Tartu," said Parts. "Today there is a lot of unused potential in the relations of between entrepreneurs of Estonia and South West Russia and both sides could benefit from more active cooperation."

Russia's share in Estonia's general trade was last year 9.3%, which makes it the third-largest trade partner for Estonia. Parts said that North West Russia is an important export market for Estonian companies, especially the food industry.

The minister called Russian companies to visit the industrial parks of Ida-Virumaa and consider expanding their activities there since the infrastructure is ready and one can start working fast, workforce speaks Russian very well and utilities costs are low, and state entrepreneurship programmes can be used.

Parts spoke also of transport cooperation between Estonia and Russia and the Estonian-Russian border cooperation programme for 2014 – 2020.
