Paet: EU visa freedom with Russia is not connected to border agreement

Print versionEstonian foreign minister Urmas Paet said in an interview that possible enforcing of the Estonian-Russian border agreement is not connected to the topic of visa freedom between the European Union and Russia.

Paet said that the EU-Russia visa freedom issue an Estonian-Russian border issue hasn't ever been linked. The newspaper noted though that the European Commission's papers about visa freedom say that Russia should be encouraged to ratify the border agreement with Estonia.
"This call to Russia is not a condition, it rather refers to the wish that it would be nice if it happened. The European Union has encouraged Russia in this respect for many years," said Paet.
Paet said thare are specific conditions that Russia is presumed to fulfil to get the visa-freedom.
"Estonian-Russian border topic is not a preliminary condition in this context, it is rather a recommendable favourable background," noted Paet.
