Saeima in Latvia approves in principle a ban on ribbons of St. George at public events

BC, Riga, 17.09.2020.Print version
Saeima in Latvia on September 17th approved in the first reading amendments to the Law on Safety of Public Entertainment and Festivity Events and the Law on Meetings, Processions, and Pickets, which stipulate banning ribbons of St. George at public events, rallies, protests and processions, informs LETA.

The amendments were submitted by members of Saeima group of the National Alliance.

MPs Janis Dombrava and Janis Iesalnieks (National Alliance) said during Saeima debates that the ribbon of St. George was a symbol of imperialism, which had also been used in Ukraine in 2014.

MPs Ritvars Jansons (National Alliance), Linda Liepina, Artuss Kaimins also spoke in support of the amendments.

On the other hand, Saeima members Boriss Cilevics (Harmony), Aldis Gobzems, Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis, and Regina Locmele-Lunova (Harmony) criticized the amendments as unnecessary.

At the moment, the Law on Meetings, Processions, and Pickets states that flags, coats of arms, anthems, and symbols (also in stylized form) of former Soviet Union and Nazi Germany may not be displayed at public events.
