PM: Ukraine needs reforms, Lithuania ready to share experience

Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius has met with Ukrainian Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Aivaras Abromavicius, the press service of the Lithuanian Government reported LETA/ELTA.

On his visit to Lithuania, Minister Abromavicius informed PM Butkevicius about the reforms carried out by the Ukrainian Government that involve reforming the management of state-owned enterprises and tax system, introduced measures for business promotion, business climate improvement and fighting corruption, as well as an energy efficiency programme. The guest thanked Lithuania and its Government for its support for Ukraine, which has been provided since the beginning of the military conflict. "Your support is very important on many levels, since Lithuania has already undergone similar changes," said Minister Abromavicius.

 

A large number of Lithuanian specialists work as consultants in Ukrainian state institutions and international organisations in Ukraine.

 

During the conversation PM Butkevicius encouraged to resolutely go further with the economic and legal changes. "Lithuania is willing to continue sharing its experience. It is important for the Ukraine to efficiently use the support of the European Union and international community," emphasized the PM.

 

The head of Lithuanian Government also inquired about Ukraine's progress with the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU. Minister Abromavicius confirmed that the Ukraine is not planning to postpone the implementation deadline.

 

During the meeting it was noted that Lithuania is among the leaders in Europe according to the implementation of eGovernment services. Butkevicius suggested cooperating in the implementation of effective communication systems in the areas of market harmonisation, legal reforms, finances, taxes, customs, transport and others.

 

The PM noted that it is important for Lithuania to have a fluent transport corridor for the container train Viking. Ukrainian support is needed in expanding transportation geography from Scandinavia to the regions of the Black and Caspian seas.

 

According to the PM, the preparedness of the Ukrainian Government to implement reforms is a great example for all Eastern partnership countries. Bilateral cooperation was also discussed during the meeting. Abromavicius introduced the reforms to the Cabinet of Lithuanian ministers.
