The European Commission's Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis (New Unity) has been chosen to also become the European Union's new trade commissioner, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday, September 8th, informs LETA.

Dombrovskis has already been holding the post temporarily since European Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan's resignation on August 26 amid a scandal about his flouting of Ireland's coronavirus rules.

Von der Leyen also named European Parliament heavyweight Mairead McGuinness as the new financial services commissioner to fill Ireland's seat at the table.

Dombrovskis, who has been serving as the European Commission's Executive Vice President for an Economy that Works for People, will also take charge of the trade portfolio and together with Paolo Gentilioni, the Commissioner for Economy, will continue to represent the European Commission in the Eurogroup, von der Leyen said at the press briefing.

Dombriovskis said on Twitter that he is honored to have been asked by von der Leyen to take on the trade portfolio. "I greatly look forward to working for the European interest in this important area, while continuing as Executive Vice-President for an Economy that Works for People," Dombrovskis tweeted.
