David Lidington pledged UK support for the Presidency priorities, highlighting the areas of digital agenda, growth and employment.

Both Ministers noticed that Latvia and the UK have very similar positions on the issue of Ukraine. EU member states’ uniform support for Ukraine and its democratically elected government should be sustained with the expectation that Ukraine will actively pursue much needed reforms in the areas of justice and the economy. The question of reforms within the EU was also addressed at the meeting. Foreign Minister Rinkevics asserted that the Latvian Presidency is ready to continue work to improve the functioning of the EU, a process in which all EU member states and institutions should be engaged.

The Rt Hon David Lidington, Minister of State for Europe, was in Riga on a working visit on 12-13 January and also met with the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima (the Latvian Parliament), Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, and Latvia’s Defence Minister Raimonds Vejonis.
