Every third suicide in Estonia committed by a pensioner

BC, Tallinn, 26.11.2014.Print version
Every third suicide in Estonia is committed by a pensioner, as about 70 retirement-age people per year commit suicides, LETA/Eesti Ekspress writes.

The Estonian suicide statistics in general is improving, because the number of suicides has decreased two times in 25 years. However, the proportion of elderly people in this sad table grows. In 1989, they accounted for 17% of all people who committed suicide while in 2013, they formed 35%.

Estonian-Swedish Mental Health and Suicidology Institute Executive Director Merike Sisask said that the increase in the proportion of the elderly is a sign that Estonia has become more similar to the western world, where the elderly have always been a risk group.

One of the main reasons for suicides among the elderly (in addition to health problems) is the feeling being neglected, both in social and family life.
