State loses EUR 80 mln tax money every year due to premature death of residents

BC, Riga, 26.11.2014.Print version
The state is losing EUR 80 million in taxes every year due to the premature death of residents caused by alcohol abuse, Latvian Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) said yesterday during the conference "Reducing Harm Caused by Alcohol in Latvia", organized by Latvian Medical Association, cites LETA.

Belevics promised that he will work diligently in order to persuade other Cabinet ministers about imposing restrictions on alcohol advertisements. He stressed that talk about alcohol advertisements having a positive effect on economic growth cannot be supported, and promised to do everything he can to enlighten his fellow ministers.

Belevics indicated that 20% of prematurely lost years of human life are due to alcohol.

"We must eliminate all causes of premature death," the minister said, adding that alcohol is one such cause.

He promised to cooperate with colleagues in other European Union member states in order to reduce the negative impact of alcohol use.
