Tartu University: parents of 20% Estonian sixth-graders work abroad
BC, Tallinn, 18.08.2014.Print version
230 out of 1,000 six-grade pupils or 22% of all answered in the wellbeing survey held for the first time in Estonia that one or both of their parents are working abroad, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht writes.
Tartu University doctoral studies student Kairi Talves, who analysed the results, explained to Eesti Päevaleht that these kids evaluate both their long-term plans for life and coping as well as the overall well-being poorer than other kids. "They have a generally more pessimistic view of their life," she said.
Among the 230 children, one parent worked abroad – for 189 children it was the father, for the rest the mother. 13 sixth-grade children who participated in the study said that both their parents are working abroad.
These children grow up in Estonia predominantly with their grandparents, said Talves.
