Even though the share of women in higher education continues to increase, only 30% of scientists are women, according to the latest data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), informs LETA.

Latvian National Commission for UNESCO consultant Liene Krivena informs that only one in five countries has achieved gender equality in science – the share of women in science between 45 and 55%, and Latvia is among these countries.

According to UNESCO data, the share of women in science in Latvia is 51%, in Lithuania – 51%, in Estonia – 43%.

UNESCO researchers point out that many women do not continue their careers after attaining education. Instead, they choose to take care of their families.
